Connecting an iPod to an Emerson Karaoke Player

How do I connect an iPod to an Emerson Karaoke player?

Emerson Karaoke machines do not have a traditional iPod docking station and they do not connect with a traditional iPod USB cable. The USB connection on the back of the player is for charging the iPod or personal player that can be charged through a USB cable. There is no data transfer using this USB connection.

The iPod or MP3 player is connected by using a cable that connects into the iPod or MP3 player's headphone jack and into the RCA (red & white) audio input connections on the back of the karaoke player. You can then hear your iPod music by selecting AUX on your karaoke player's function knob. If your iPod head phone jack has 3 bands, your iPod may have video capabilities on that same jack. By using a cable with red, white and yellow RCA ends, you may be able to take advantage of the video from your iPod onto the karaoke player's monitor, or your TV. Due to the many changes and generations of iPods and associative devices, this is something each user will have to research on their own. Many adaptor cables are available from Radio Shack or possibly Apple themselves. We cannot guarantee compatibility with any device.

Tech Support for Emerson Karaoke Products

Having problems with one of these players? SD511SC, SD512, SD513, SD514
Don't understand how to download music or what an MP3.LRC format is?

Quick tips that will help you resolve your problem(s). You will need to understand the type of cable(s) used on your existing DVD player and TV. Regardless of which you have or don't have, cables are provided in the product box to connect all devices. It will be necessary you match colors when connecting RCA cables. Yellow denotes video, red denotes audio right and white denotes audio left. When connecting to a DVD player, you will ALWAYS want the OUTPUT RCA Ports. When connecting to your TV, you will ALWAYS want your INPUT RCA Ports.

What product did you purchase? Model numbers can be found above the bar code on the rear of the box.

Plug N Sing Microphone, also known as DVD Microphone

Before you start, shut off any surround sound, satellite or enhanced audio equipment you may have. For the sake of testing all that must be removed from the connections. Connect directly into the TV. If you have a DVD recorder, you must connect to the DVD outputs on the BACK of the DVD player, not the front. The front jacks are inputs. Once you've found your microphone works, you can then experiment with connections to your other device. However, due to the wide variety of audio systems, we cannot lend technical support for these devices.

How is your DVD player connected to your TV?

I'm smart, give me the condensed version.

  1. Connect microphone's DVD RCA Cable end into the DVD Player's RCA OUTPUT Port
  2. Connect microphone's TV RCA Cable end into the TV's RCA INPUT Port
  3. Turn microphone on. Should see a red light. (Does not mean battery is good though)
  4. Grab TV Remote Control. Turn TV on. You MUST select the correct TV input channel associated with the TV RCA INPUT Ports. TVs are different. You will be looking for channels like: Line1, Line2, Aux, Aux1, Aux2, etc. You DO NOT want channel 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.
  5. If your microphone is equipped with a volume control, turn it up all the way.
  6. Turn TV volume higher than normal for testing. You do not need to play a disc to test microphone. Hold microphone to your lips and give a loud "check check check"

I did above steps and microphone does not work...

90% of all tech support calls for Plug N Sing Microphones are related to #4 and #6 above. You must be sure you have the proper TV INPUT channel selected. You must have the microphone volume (if available on your model) all the way up and the TV volume up higher than normal.

You cannot see the DVD disc on your TV screen. Make sure you are connected to the DVD OUTPUT RCA Ports. DVD/VCR Combo players or DVD's with record functions may have RCA input ports. Do not connect to DVD input ports if they exist. Also, when using a DVD/VCR Combo player, be sure you have opted to view the DVD disc and not the VCR side.

Your microphone only has red and white RCA cables. Some of the earlier models only had 2 cord ends to accommodate audio left and rights. Use your existing yellow RCA cable to connect between the DVD player and TV video RCA ports. If you don't have a yellow RCA cable handy, most any store selling electronics will have one. You may also contact us.

If still not successful, contact customer service.

I have a DVD/TV Combo unit.

Our Plug N Sing or DVD Microphones will not work with a DVD/TV Combo unit. For our microphones to function, we must connect between the DVD player and TV. DVD/TV Combo uNits are connected internally and connections are not accessible. However, you can use the DVD/TV Combo unit as either a DVD player or a TV and connect to another DVD player or TV to get the microphone to work properly.

Lord help me! I have Cable, Satellite, Surround Sound and maybe things I don't have a clue as to what they are.

  1. Electronics can be intimidating at times. Regardless, our microphones will still connect and work fine. If you have open (not used) DVD OUTPUT RCA Ports and open TV INPUT RCA Ports, that's all you need to get connected.
  2. If you don't have open RCA OUTPUT and INPUT Ports, it will be necessary you temporarily disconnect whatever device(s) to open the ports, then connect our microphone.
  3. Note: we cannot respond to tech support issues where you have decided to keep your surround sound or other devices in the loop. Such connections can be problematic for troubleshooting. It's best to only experiment after you have confirmed a simple connection works.

HD515 MP3.LRC Digital Player

I cannot transfer my iTunes or iPod music to my HD515 player

Our player has no compatibility options with iTunes or transfer capabilities with iPod. Music must be transferred from a Windows computer to the HD515 through the use of the Song Transfer Program provided on the HD515.

I deleted my original songs, files and Song Transfer Program. How do I get them back?

If you deleted these files with no backups, contact customer service.

How do I transfer my music files to the HD515?

Only MP3 and WMA files are able to be transferred to the HD515. Transfer is accomplished by connecting the HD515 to your computer with the USB cable provided. Connect USB cable to your computer and the small USB port on the front of the HD515. Do not connect computer to USB port on rear of computer. Follow the below steps to transfer music. NOTE: Knowledge of the Windows operating system and how to navigate using Windows Explorer is required to transfer music. If you are not familiar with Windows Explorer and the ability to Drag-n-Drop files, find someone who is capable. Emerson Karaoke is neither responsible or obligated to teach a user how to use their Windows software.

  1. Connect the provided USB cable to your computer and to the USB data port on the front of the HD515.
  2. If prompted, turn off HD515 and restart.
  3. Open Windows Explorer
  4. When connected properly, the HD515 will appear as a new external HDD in Windows Explorer folder view. Assuming you already had a Drive C: and Drive D:, you should see the next letter appear as Drive E: HD515.
  5. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the Song Transfer folder on the HD515.
  6. In the Song Transfer folder, you'll find a SongTransfer.exe program file. Double-click that file to start the Song Transfer utility software.
  7. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to to the folder on your computer where you store your MP3 files. (Depending on how, when and where you downloaded your music files, you may have to search for them using Windows Explorer)
  8. You can select one or multiple MP3 files. Once you've selected your file(s), drag-n-drop those files into the middle of the Song Transfer utility software window. If successful, you will see the utility program converting and transferring your music files for use in the HD515.

I drag-n-dropped my music files into the Song Transfer program, but the program locked up. Why?

The Song Transfer program will only accept MP3, WMA or LRC files for transfer. You may have dropped an unfamiliar file into the program. Close program and restart transfer process with compatible files.

I successfully transferred my MP3 files, but I do not see any lyrics. Why?

To see lyrics with any music file, you must have an accompanying lyric (LRC) file. The accompanying LRC file must have the exact same filename as the music file it represents, but with an LRC filename extension.

Where can I get the lyric (LRC) file for my music file(s)?

Pre-made LRC files, if they exist for your song, will accompany the MP3 file as a combo download. If an LRC does not exist, it can be created by downloading software available online. A simple Google search for creating LRC files will result in options. Emerson Karaoke cannot recommend any particular software for creating LRC files.

Where can I buy MP3 and LRC files as a combo download?

Multiple music formats are available on SingTheHits.com or by searching through Google for MP3 LRC downloads. Note: Songs downloaded from websites may be compressed (zipped) and may need to be decompressed (unzipped) with the most popular compression software WinZip.

GP398 Front Load CDG Player

You've connected an iPod and can hear music from only one speaker.

When the GP398 CDG player is connected to an external music source like an iPod, only one speaker will function.

Microphone on player will not work.

  1. Troubleshoot by doing these steps...
  2. Make sure function select knob is on CDG or the middle position
  3. Make sure AVC (Auto Voice Cancel) knob is turned all the way counterclockwise
  4. Make sure volume knob is turned up all the way
  5. Hold microphone close to lips ... speak loudly
  6. If microphone does not work, please contact support

Player is not working.

A player is much like a computer. Reboots often resolve issues.

Player will not play karaoke disc.

Look at the top right-hand knob. Make sure it's switched to CDG.

Cannot hear singer's voice or voice and/or music cuts out.

Look at the A.V.C. (Auto Voice Cancel). Turn all the way to the left (counterclockwise). The AVC may be cancelling too much voice.

The function switch has 3 positions:

  1. CD (Left) is for playing regular CD's
  2. Monitor CDG (Middle) is for playing regular CDG's
  3. Auxilary In (Right) is for playing music from an external source like an iPod or MP3 player

Words are scrambled on the screen.

Remove CD+G disc and clean with cloth in an up and down motion. Thumbprints contain body oil causing words to skip.

Microphone is not loud enough.

Be certain both mic volume knobs are turned to the right, as well as Master Volume knob.

Microphone is not working.

1/4'' plug on mic must be pushed all way in. Push switch on microphone upwards.

Words do not appear on color TV screen.

The video connection from the DVD player through the microhone and to the TV is done through the yellow RCA jacks and cables. The original RCA cord that connected the DVD player to the TV can be used. Or, the yellow RCA cables that come with the microphone can be used. Makes no difference. With video connection made, make sure your TV input is set to how you would normally watch a DVD movie. Line 1, Line 2, etc. This assumes you are using the same RCA ports you used with your original connectors. However, most DVD players and TVs are connected on rear RCA ports. Some folks may choose to use the front TV ports if they exist. In that case, you must select the proper input channel which would be different than your normal operating situation.

Music is not loud enough.

Turn up master volume knob and place balance knob in center.

After using Key Changer, next song seems too high or low.

Middle key button MUST be hit after each use to return to next songs orignal key.

Sound quality sounds too high or low.

Tone knob is for adjusting quality. Turn left for bass or right for treble.

TV screen is too light.

See back of player for V-Hold, contrast and brightness controls.

How do we connect to color TV or Stereo unit?

See instructions and diagram on back of player. A color TV can be connected using the yellow video out RCA port on the player to the video in port on the TV. Be sure to set your TV channel to accept external input. Line 1, Line 2, etc. The audio out RCA jacks on the player can be connected to the audio in ports on the stereo.

DT558, DT559, DT560 Karaoke Players

559, 560 - Cannot get enough mic volume.

Open tray, press button to get microphone volume control. Press '+' increase button until microphone volume is all the way up. Turn master volume down. Connect microphones to speakers and control volume from there.

560 Owners. Where do I mount the speakers on the stand?

The speaker tray is actually the cup holder tray. You may have to tie speakers to the stand or tray to ensure they do not get bumped, fall off and damage speakers.

New to Karaoke?

  1. Generally, there are 3 types of karaoke discs: CDG, CDGM and DVD
  2. CDG has no Lead vocals on the disc.
  3. CDGM will have 2 versions of the same songs. One with lead vocals, one without lead vocals.
  4. DVD discs may or may not have lead vocals. It depends on the manufacturer.
  5. CDG/CDGM discs will play in most CD and DVD players, but you will not be able to see lyrics on your TV screen. To see lyrics, you must have a CDG Karaoke machine.
  6. Some DVD players may be karaoke compatible and will play CDG discs. Most DVD players purchased through normal retail are not karaoke compatible. Check your manual before purchasing discs.
  7. DVD Karaoke discs will not play in a CDG Karaoke machine. They will however play in a karaoke DVD player or normal household DVD player.

The chart to the right may be useful in determining what karaoke discs to purchase.

Generally, if you have a DVD Microphone and wish to play karaoke on your home DVD player, buy DVD karaoke discs.

If you have a 955 or 398 model player, you will want to purchase CDG or CDGM karaoke discs.

Helpful Tips

When playing Forever Hits DVD Karaoke on my computer, how do I turn lead vocals On/Off?

Using Windows Media Player, lead vocals can be turned on and off by selecting the English or French language tracks. See picture below.

SD511SC, SD512, SD513 and SD514 MP3.LRC Karaoke Players

What is MP3.LRC?

MP3.LRC is no more than 2 files with the same filename (different extensions). One file being an MP3 file format is the same MP3 music files you've been listening to for years. They are available for downloading all across the internet. SingTheHits.com is a good starting point. The LRC file is the lyric file that contains the words to your music. It is formatted as a normal text file that can be opened and manually edited with notepad. Inside the file, there's timing tags that define when the next line of lyrics is going to be displayed. Although a person can manually create an LRC file, it's much easier to use an LRC creator program found on on SingTheHits.com. Simply, you search for lyrics using Google, then cut-n-paste them into the LRC creator program. Then, start playing your MP3 music file inside the creator program. When it's time to play a line of music, hit a keyboard key and the program will register that line of text to display at 'xxx' seconds. Within a few minutes, your MP3 song has lyrics and will play on the above machines.

How do I get my MP3.LRC music on my player?

Copy both your MP3 and LRC files onto an SD Card, insert the SD Card into your player, turn the player on, navigate to the SD Card and you'll see a menu of your songs. Select a song and play it. Your MP3.LRC player will always play MP3 music files whether you have an LRC (lyric) file or not. However, if there happens to be an LRC file present, with the exact same filename (different extension) it will cue the two files to play in sync with each other. So, as the music plays, the lyrics will be displayed on your player's screen.

How do I delete the songs on the player and replace with my own songs?

Models SD512 and HD515 have the capability of connecting to your computer and showing up in Windows (not Mac) as an external HDD. You can then delete the songs and use the Song Transfer Program to install new songs.

The SD511SC, SD513 and SD514 players have songs built-in to the players and they cannot be deleted. Nor can you add songs to the internal storage chip. To add more songs, use your computer to copy songs onto an SD Card, then insert the SD Card into the players and play your selections.

How do I download songs?

Downloading songs is an easy process and can be generally described as going online to a site like SingTheHits.com. Find your songs, opt to purchase, then click to download (transfer) the songs to your computer. If this is something you think is intimidating, find a friend to show you how. DO NOT CALL TECH SUPPORT FOR HELP WITH DOWNLOADING! Due to everyone's computer being setup differently and add to that the wide variety of user skills, this is not something we cannot sit on a phone and explain. We are happy to help you with any player issues. Downloading is not a player issue. It's a user or computer issue.
